Why will my ipod not work with a golf 09 plate?

My mum has just bought a golf 09 plate and i can not connect her i-pod to it. But it didn’t work. I thought o lets just try using mine which is about 2 months newer than my mum and it works. I have got the right adapters. Can anybody help???
