you say ” 18 gauge is like door bell wire, ” but 18 is what is used in coaxial cable coming from the outside and it is thick. so how you say that is the weakest cable?
RG59 used to be the common cable TV cable. RG6 is an improved (Better shielding from interference, for example) version and is used in preference to the old RG59. RG11 has lower signal loss over distance than RG6, and is used for large distribution systems with long runs, where signal loss would be significant. Rarely does the average home require RG11. The outer jacket of outdoor cable is designed to resist the effects of the elements such as sun and moisture. There is also a grade of cable designed and designated “direct burial” which is available for all the RG cables. (RG originally stood for “radio grade”.) The “Plenum” designation means the jacket is made from a material which will not form deadly fumes when ignited in a fire. Plenum is the space where return air in a heating or cooling system flows. Poisonous fumes are not allowed in plenums. The space above suspended ceilings in offices is often a plenum. Air ducts are all plenums. PVC is a designation for PolyVinyl Chloride, the most common use thereof being for pipes for commercial and residential plumbing. PVC is a known carcinogen and is being used less in favor of other alternatives in many applications. Putting PVC in a Plenum can be dangerous in the event of a fire. Most cables rated for Plenum use are coated with Teflon or a similar high combustion temperature covering.
Quad Shield is a generic term which refers to coaxial cable shielding systems which use a combination of foil and/or braided shields to keep electromagnetic interference from electronic signal cables. Known in the audio world by the brand name “Star-Quad”, multiple shield techniques are very effective at mitigating different frequencies of electro magnetic interference, making the resulting signal cleaner and quieter. AWG stands for American Wire Guage. The smaller the number, the larger the wire and the amperage handling. For normal distances, 14 gauge wire can handle 15 amperes without overheating. 12 gauge will do 20 amps. 10 gauge does 30 amps. 18 gauge is like door bell wire, or really thin speaker wire. Center conductor is the piece of copper (usually) in the center of a cable. All insulators and shields are propagated concentrically from the center conductor. Any shield as the name implies, separates the center conductor from the outside world by being formed as a metallic flexible mesh or foil tube or small pipe through which the center conductor or conductors travel. Braid shields are constructed of individual wire strands formed onto braided tubes and wrapped around electrical conductors. Various braiding constructs provide varying levels of shield coverage, durability and flexibility. Various materials do better shielding jobs than others on certain forms of interference. Copper braid shield operates in the higher (radio) frequencies. Ferrous (steel) shielding is more effective in the lower frequencies, such as 60 cycle hum from your residential a.c. wiring. Although the equivalent wire gauge size of a coax cable is about 4 gauge, we only discuss the actual signal/current carrying conductor which in the case of 18 gauge is about .8 mm or .040303 inches.
