Do Bright colors overstimulate children?

THis may sound wierd, because everyone assumes that children love bright primary colors, but I am noticing a trend. For starters, my son blatently dislikes primary colors. We bought him a toy unit with primary colored plastic bins and he kept dumping them and hiding them under his bed. We replaced the bins with canvas bins in more muted colors and he quit doing it.

Then, my cousin painted her kid’s white walled room red and orange, and filled it with red and orange furnature. Now her kids bicker and fight in the room, when they didn’t before, and when they go into the taupe living room they don’t.

I also toured several daycares looking for one for my son, and found that daycares that had nice, mellow color palets had quieter, calmer children, and the ones that were BRIGHT had a lot more noise and rowdier kids.

So, do you think that the wash of bright colors oversimulates children?

They say McDonald’s is painted Yellow and Red because it makes people eat faster and more jumpy.

So perhaps there is a truth to your theory.

However, bright colors also develop a child’s brain more than muted colors do.

A red and orange bedroom doesn’t sound very soothing and relaxing to me though. But I don’t know that I’d want to raise my kids in a beige world either. I kind of like my child’s spunk and enthusiasm for life.
