Cat5 ethernet extender options?

There’s a device I’d like to hook up to my router, but it’s maybe 10 feet short. So, I wondered if I could extend it somehow, since I’ve heard of extenders/repeaters.

I did some google searches, and the best I found were these:

One solution costs about $1, the other costs 60x that. There’s the phrase “You get what you pay for”, so I’m reluctant on the $1 fix. Any idea what the differences between the two are, and if the $1 one would really do the job?

If neither of these solutions are ideal, is there any other thing I could buy that would do the trick? I know how to “make” ethernet cables, but I’d prefer not to. Thanks for your time.

The coupler will be fine. Ethernet is designed to work over reasonable distances and ten feet is neither here nor there. Start worrying when the total run approaches 300 feet, not before.

In any case, that adapter doesn’t do what I think you think it does. It is designed to extend the lead for a USB cable far further than normally permitted, using a standard network lead between the computer and peripheral. In isn’t really an Ethernet link (the description is misleading there), it just works over the same cable.

I wouldn’t be tempted to pay a premium for a brand name part on something like this – the quality won’t be any better and essentially you will be paying a hefty premium for attractive packaging.
