connect a hd magnavox dvd vhs recorder to direct tv reciever?

we do not have cable. we use direct tv. The reciever that is located in my room is the basic reciever that can not record showes. I just recently purchased an HD DVD recorder/ VCR dub recorder at wallyworld because mother wants me to transfer old family tapes to dvd for xmas. My question is how would I get the DVD recorder hooked up so I can record tv shows directly from the tv to a dvd.

NOTE the player only has Red White and Yellow composite hook ups on the back and a HDMI hook up for people who have an HD TV.

I read over the instructions and I am confused as ever.

NOTE I did get it hooked up so it works but I want to be able to record from the tv aka the direct tv reciever as well as play and watch movies. can someone help?

This is tough to answer perfectly without knowing all the specs of your VCR/DVD deck. Many of them only record from an external input via the VCR. Recording DVDs is only done internally, from a VHS tape.

This is something of a guess, but I’d say the HDMI connector on the deck is an output to the TV. You should be able to use it as the output for either a tape or a DVD.

Now to record: assuming again that the VCR is the only recording method from an external source, do this: find the RF OUT jack on the DirecTV box. It looks like the antenna connector on your TV. Connect that to the antenna input jack on the recording deck. Fire up the VCR, put it on channel 3, and leave it there permanently. You can now select channels on the DirecTV box in the usual manner, and also record on the VCR in the usual manner.

The cable box converts any incoming channel to analog channel 3 at its RF OUT jack. You have to carefully program the VCR as usual, noting the start and stop times of your desired program. Also, you can’t change channels while the program is recording–again, the VCR records whatever channel the satellite box is seeing at the time. And of course, your recordings will be standard-def analog.

Followup: Scott’s suggestion is the way to go if your recording deck has composite (yellow-red-white) input jacks. (That’s input, not output.) It would be your first choice; otherwise the channel 3 option explained above. Your recording is still SD analog either way.
