why is it that when i plug my ethernet cable on my laptop the connections says local network only?

When I plug my ethernet cable on my pc, I can surf the web and the connection is not locan only but when I plug the connection to my laptop, the connection says that local connection only. Why is that? How can I cange the settings of my laptop? Help!!!
I’m using Vaio, windows vista. i already tried to obtained my ip address automatically and also obtained my dns server automatically but the connection is still local. What else can I do?
