Speed of fiber vs copper: gigabit ethernet?
Is the speed between two: 1000BASE-SX LC multimode 50/125um fiber modules
the same as between two: 1000BASE-T CAT5e modules
Assume: Gigabit ethernet protocol, length of cable/fiber is nominal (under 100 feet), all else is the same, connections are between two quality switches.
[I think I am getting hung up on LC having a separate send and receive fiber (asynchronous), so the related question is: does gigabit ethernet have a max bandwidth of ~1gb or ~2gb, or...?]
Yes, it’s precisely the same.
While 1000BASE-T doesn’t use separate wires for transmit and receive, it still provides two channels, one in each direction, each capable of exchanging a billion bits of user data per second. (A piece of wire has no problem carrying two signals, one in each direction, at the same time.)
While it’s theoretically possible to create half-duplex gigabit ethernet, nobody actually does so. For practical purposes, all gigabit links are full-duplex.
