Anyone know of a good PCB monopole antenna calculator?

I need to construct a 1/4 wavelength, monopole antenna on PCB. Anyone know of a good calc program for this? I’d like to know the input impedance as well so I can do an easy matching network.

10.62 GHz center freq.

i dont know of a calculator that does this really well. some talk about a program called hfss, but i don’t have direct experience with this myself.

the trouble is, in this band the impedance of pcb signal wires is a significant contribution to the design. having looked under the hood of some wifi products, i see extremely fine detail: precise widths of signal paths, and few sharp turns, and lots of tiny-value surface-mount capacitors, chosen and added during fabrication (because variances including imperfections force adjustments during assembly).

so you can expect to do lots of tuning and/or trial-and-error.

wave impedance thru air is ~377 ohm. you may want to match that.

A quarter-wavelength monopole antenna for 10.62 GHz will be between 4.7 to 7 mm long.
( c/f x 0.25= 0.00706m but the speed of signal propagation is probably ~0.67c).

[Aside -- In a coaxial design, you can imagine your antenna as a mushroom shape that protrudes upwards from the end of a coaxial cable of the matching characteristic impedance. Note that coaxial impedance depends only on the ratio of the outside diameter of the signal path to the inside diameter of the shield. maintain this ratio as the bulb protrudes, allowing the shield to flare, something like the bell of a brass instrument. This is a 3-dimensional design, and smoothness and regularity of shape will be significant. Many designs make use of a waveguide, which at these frequencies is very low loss. Suggestion: if you can make your antenna adjustable, by raising and lowering the bulb in small increments, you can tune it for practical gain in actual use.]

If this is to be printed entirely on PCB then your characteristic impedance is that of a signal path with fixed distance to a back plane (a.k.a. microstrip). on a board i’m looking at here, the signal path was cut by etching around the traces so that ground or neutral is always a set distance from from the signal path, enabling its characteristic impedance to remain stable. even so, inhomogeneity of the dielectric properties of the board could cause differences at assembly.

In radio many circuits are designed around 50 ohm impedance, which is a trade-off between attenuation and power. If this is receiver-only, you may want 75 ohm impedance. both these are pretty common.
