How do I terminate fiber optic cable?

I want to know how to terminate fiber optic cable for my own network. I’m kinda a do it yourself kind of guy and I have terminated my own copper network, now I want to try out fiber any pointers?

Fiber so we meet again. I remember when I first terminated fiber 12 years ago, and it was very labor intensive and at the end of the process you would put the connector in the microscope and if you see something that looked exactly like an eclips you’ll have to do it all over again. These connectors are still sold and are cheap about $3 each and are still used in fiber jumper assemblies due to them having all the tools and cheap labor in order to be competitive on selling jumpers. (1 meter ST/ST around $15)

If I terminated fiber optic cable everyday I would install the more labor intensive connector but being a contractor and doing it only a few times a year I install a fiber connector that is so easy I know you can do it. Most networks require multi-mode fiber cable and if that’s what your using you’ll want a MM connector. Make sure the fiber is 62.5 and then your connector is 62.5

1)Make sure fiber you use matches the connectors as far as if its multi mode or single more and get the micron size correct 62.5MM cable to 62.5MM connector

Next you’ll need to strip the jacket off the glass, you need a fiber stripper and it takes practice. Then cleave the connector to the correct length that the connector recommends. The connector I use is the A.F.L. fast includes directors and what lengths to cleave your fiber to and you’ll want a cleaver with a good measuring indicator cost will be around $500 and up.

2)Strip fiber and cleave to what the connector recommends.

The Fast connectors are already pre polished for you (manufacture did the hard part) and then you slide your glass into the connector and press on the tabs to close the cams inside the connector and your finished. Look into getting a tester.
