what requirements for external socket outlet above shop window?

i have been asked to fit a socket above a shop window so the owner can plug in christmas lights, ive tried reading the 17th regs but cant find anything, could someone tell me the minimum requirements please, ie height 1p rating & should it be 5amp round 3 pin type

The 17th edition of the Wiring Regs does not tell you how to do any specific installation. It is a set of standard requirements that must be adhered to when wiring work is done. That is a big difference. There are separate guide books that give good practice for particular installation jobs. A trained electrician would know this.

The simple answer is that you would be breaking the law if you did this job so you must refuse it. You also tell the shop owner that he must employ a trained and registered electrician to do it.

The specific legal regulation that covers this is the Building Regulations Part P. Because it is an outside socket it comes within the definition of a “special location” and so the work must be properly tested and certified, with a copy lodged at the Local Authority.

The legal consequences of doing this “on the cheap” would be very severe indeed. He would have committed a criminal offence (thus he’s get a criminal record when convicted) and his insurance would be rendered invalid (because he would have had unauthorised and illegal work done). If anyone got an electric shock or there was a fire then he would be in really deep doo-doo.

DO NOT DISPAIR – THERE IS A SOLUTION

What you should do is to run out an extension lead from an internal ring main socket. The external socket would be an IP54 box with a 13A switched outlet with a weatherproof cover for the plug; and the plug at the inside end would be a Power Breaker type of plug that contains a built in RCCB device.
That would be simple, legal, safe and inexpensive. The hardest part would be working out how to run the cable through a window whilst still maintaing security.
