Can I combine a the strands of cat5 cable to form in wall speaker cable?

My house was built planning to use A-Bus, so cat5 is running from the source to individual room volume controls, then speaker cable has been run from the volume controls to speakers. I’m not looking for great sound, but just want to convert to a simple impedance matching system. I would use one Cat5 cable for 2 channels (4 strands for each channel). Is this safe?

While not ideal, it’s definitely safe. Many smaller speakers use very thin speaker wires that are very similar to CAT5. Unless these are huge speakers that you will be blasting sound from, don’t even bother combining the strands. Pick two and hook them up.
