How do I use a stereo audio cable to connect my mp3 player to a tv?

I can get it to play using this cable plugged into my aux jack on my car stereo, but it won’t play on the computer or tv, even though it’s plugged in where it’s supposed to and says on the package that it can be used on any audio device with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Is there something extra I need to do to get it to work, or do I have bum cables?
