Surface Metrology $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Surface metrology is the measurement of smallscale features on surfaces, and is a branch of metrology. Surface primary form, surface waviness and surface roughness are the parameters most commonly associated with the field. It is important to many disciplines and is mostly known for the machining of precision parts and assemblies which contain mating surfaces or which must operate with high internal pressures. Surface metrology is the study of surface geometry, also called surface texture or surface roughness. The approach is to measure and analyze the surface texture in order to be able to understand how the texture is influenced by its history, (e.g., manufacture, wear, fracture) and how it influences its behavior (e.g., adhesion, gloss, friction). Surface Normal $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A surface normal, or simply normal, to a flat surface is a vector that is perpendicular to that surface. A normal to a nonflat surface at a point P on the surface is a vector perpendicular to the tangent plane to that surface at P. The word normal is also used as an adjective: a line normal to a plane, the normal component of a force, the normal vector, etc. The concept of normality generalizes to orthogonality. In the twodimensional case, a normal line perpendicularly intersects the tangent line to a curve at a given point. The normal is often used in computer graphics to determine a surfaces orientation toward a light source for flat shading, or the orientation of each of the corners (vertices) to mimic a curved surface with Phong shading. Free Surface $92.4 In physics a free surface is the surface of a fluid that is subject to constant perpendicular normal stress and zero parallel shear stress, such as the boundary between two homogenous fluids, for example liquid water and the air in the Earths atmosphere. Unlike liquids, gases cannot form a free surface on their own. A liquid in a gravitational field will form a free surface if unconfined from above. Under mechanical equilibrium this free surface must be perpendicular to the forces acting on the liquid; if not there would be a force along the surface, and the liquid would flow in that direction. Thus, on the surface of the Earth, all free surfaces of liquids are horizontal unless disturbed. In a free liquid at rest, that is, one subject to internal attractive forces only and not affected by outside forces such as a gravitational field, its free surface will assume the shape with the least surface area for its volume a perfect sphere. This can be demonstrated experimentally by observing a large globule of oil placed below the surface of a mixture of water and alcohol having the same density so the oil has neutral buoyancy. Capillary Surface $58.94 In fluid mechanics and mathematics, a capillary surface is a surface that represents the interface between two different fluids. As a consequence of being a surface, a capillary surface has no thickness in slight contrast with most real fluid interfaces. Capillary surfaces are of interest in mathematics because the problems involved are very nonlinear and have interesting properties, such as discontinuous dependence on boundary data at isolated points. In particular, static capillary surfaces with gravity absent have constant mean curvature, so that a minimal surface is a special case of static capillary surface. They are also of practical interest for fluid management in space, where both flow and static configuration are often dominated by capillary effects. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 72 Publication Date: 2010/07/26 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.17 inches |

Surface Finishing $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Surface finishing is a broad range of industrial processes that alter the surface of a manufactured item to achieve a certain property. Finishing processes may be employed to: improve appearance, adhesion or wettability, solderability, corrosion resistance, tarnish resistance, chemical resistance, wear resistance, hardness, modify electrical conductivity, remove burrs and other surface flaws, and control the surface friction. In limited cases some of these techniques can be used to restore original dimensions to salvage or repair an item. Mechanical processes may also be categorized together because of similarities the final surface finish. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Developable Surface $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In mathematics, a developable surface is a surface with zero Gaussian curvature. That is, it is surface that can be flattened onto a plane without distortion (i.e. stretching or compressing ). Conversely, it is a surface which can be made by transforming a plane (i.e. folding, bending, rolling, cutting and/or gluing ). In three dimensions all developable surfaces are ruled surfaces. There are developable surfaces in R4 which are not ruled.Foormally, in mathematics, a developable surface is a surface with zero Gaussian curvature. One consequence of this is that all developable surfaces embedded in 3Dspace are ruled surfaces (though hyperboloids are examples of ruled surfaces which are not developable). Because of this, many developable surfaces can be visualised as the surface formed by moving a straight line in space. For example, a cone is formed by keeping one endpoint of a line fixed whilst moving the other endpoint in a circle. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Surface Piercing $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Surface piercings are any body piercings that take place on the surface sewn into the body through areas which are not particularly concave or convex, where the piercing canal transverses a surface flap of skin, rather than running completely through a piece of body tissue from one side to another. A surface bar follows the plane of skin, while a standard piercing is pierced through the plane. Sometimes surface piercings are difficult to heal, because, as the body rejects the body jewelry as a foreign object, the jewelry is pushed to the surface, causing the piercing to grow out or also called rejection. Proper placement and jewelry selection by an experienced body piercer can help alleviate this problem. A well done surface can last anywhere between 3 months and several years. Minimal Surface $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In mathematics, a minimal surface is a surface with a mean curvature of zero. These include, but are not limited to, surfaces of minimum area subject to various constraints. Physical models of areaminimizing minimal surfaces can be made by dipping a wire frame into a soap solution, forming a soap film, which is a minimal surface whose boundary is the wire frame. Catalan Surface $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In geometry, a Catalan surface, named after the Belgian mathematician Eugene Charles Catalan, is a ruled surface all of whose rulings are parallel to a fixed plane. The vector equation of a Catalan surface is given by r = s(u) + v L(u), where r = s(u) is the space curve and L(u) is the unit vector of the ruling at u = u. All the vectors L(u) are parallel to the same plane, called the directrix plane of the surface. This can be characterized by the condition: the mixed product L(u), L (u), L (u)] = 0. Saddle Surface $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A saddle surface is a smooth surface containing one or more saddle points. The term derives from the peculiar shape of historical horse saddles, which curve both up and down. Classical examples of twodimensional saddle surfaces in the Euclidean space are second order surfaces, the hyperbolic paraboloid z = x2 y2 (which is often referred to as the saddle surface or the standard saddle surface ) and hyperboloid of one sheet. Saddle surfaces have negative Gaussian curvature which distinguish them from convex/elliptical surfaces which have positive Gaussian curvature. Surface and Destroy $29.95 World War II submariners rarely experienced anything as exhilarating or horrifying as the surface gun attack. Between the ocean floor and the rolling whitecaps above, submarines patrolled a dark abyss in a fusion of silence, shadows, and steel, firing around eleven thousand torpedoes, sinking Japanese men-of-war and more than one thousand merchant ships. But the anonymity and simplicity of the stealthy torpedo attack hid the savagery of warfare — a stark difference from the brutality of the surface gun maneuver. As the submarine shot through the surface of the water, confined sailors scrambled through the hatches armed with large-caliber guns and met the enemy face-to-face. Surface and Destroy: The Submarine Gun War in the Pacific reveals the nature of submarine warfare in the Pacific Ocean during World War II and investigates the challenges of facing the enemy on the surface. The surface battle amplified the realities of war, bringing submariners into close contact with survivors and potential prisoners of war. As Japan’s larger ships disappeared from the Pacific theater, American submarines turned their attention to smaller craft such as patrol boats, schooners, sampans, and junks. Some officers refused to attack enemy vessels of questionable value, while others attacked reluctantly and tried to minimize casualties. Michael Sturma focuses on the submariners’ reactions and attitudes toward their victims, exploring the sailors’ personal standards of morality and their ability to wage total war. Surface and Destroy is a thorough analysis of the submariner experience and the effects of surface attacks on the war in the Pacific, offering a compelling study of the battles that became “intolerably personal.” |

Surface Conductivity $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Surface conductivity is an additional electric conductivity of fluid in the vicinity of the charged surface. Fluid conductivity is associated with ions motion in electric field. Concentration of ions is higher close to the charged surfaces. They are attracted there by electrostatic forces induced by the surface charge. This layer with higher ions concentration is a part of the interfacial Double Layer. Higher concentration of ions in this layer leads to higher conductivity. Smoluchowski was the first one who recognized importance of the surface conductivity at the beginning of the 20th century. There is detail description of the surface conductivity by Lyklema in Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science. Double Layer has two regions, according to well established GouyChapmanStern model, Ref.2. The upper level, which is in contact with fluid bulk is diffuse layer. Interior part, that is in contact with interface is Stern layer. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Subdivision Surface $58.94 A subdivision surface, in the field of 3D computer graphics, is a method of representing a smooth surface via the specification of a coarser piecewise linear polygon mesh. The smooth surface can be calculated from the coarse mesh as the limit of a recursive process of subdividing each polygonal face into smaller faces that better approximate the smooth surface. The subdivision surfaces are defined recursively. The process starts with a given polygonal mesh. A refinement scheme is then applied to this mesh. This process takes that mesh and subdivides it, creating new vertices and new faces. The positions of the new vertices in the mesh are computed based on the positions of nearby old vertices. In some refinement schemes, the positions of old vertices might also be altered (possibly based on the positions of new vertices). Road Surface $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Road surface (British English) or pavement (American English) is the durable surface material laid down on an area intended to sustain traffic. Such surfaces are frequently marked to guide traffic. The most common modern paving methods are asphalt and concrete. In the past, brick was extensively used, as was metalling. Today, permeable paving methods are beginning to be used more for lowimpact roadways and walkways. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Irregularity of a Surface $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In mathematics, the irregularity of a complex surface X is the Hodge number h0,1= dim H1(OX), usually denoted by q (Wolf P. Barth, Klaus Hulek Chris A.M. Peters et al. 2004). The irregularity of an algebraic surface is sometimes defined to be this Hodge number, and sometimes defined to be the dimension of the Picard variety (Bombieri Mumford 1977, p.26), which is the same in characteristic 0 but can be smaller in positive characteristic. Surface Modeling $129.95 Although GIS provides powerful functionality for spatial analysis, data overlay and storage, these spatially oriented systems lack the ability to represent temporal dynamics, which is a major impediment to its use in surface modeling. However, rapid development of computing technology in recent years has made real-time spatial analysis and real-time data visualization become realizable. Based on newly developed methods, Surface Modeling: High Accuracy and High Speed Methods explores solutions to big-error and slow-efficiency problems, two critical challenges have long plagued those working in with geographical information system (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD). By developing high accuracy and high speed methods for surface modeling, the book builds a bridge between the mathematical-oriented theory of surface modeling and the user-oriented application where the user is actually able to retrieve information on the method itself. The author examines a novel method of high accuracy surface modeling (HASM) in terms of the fundamental theorem of surfaces. He then analyzes the coefficient matrix and develops an adaptive method of HASM (HASM-AM), a multi-grade method of HASM (HASM-MG), and an adjustment method of HASM (HASM-AD). He uses numerical tests and real world studies to demonstrate that HASM-AM, HASM-MG, and HASM-AD have highly accelerated computational speed, especially for simulations with huge computational work. Building on this, the book discusses a HASM-based method for dynamic simulation (HASM-FDS), and then applies HASM methods to simulate terrains, climate change, ecosystem change, land cover, and soil properties. It demonstrates HASM's potential for simulating population distribution, human carrying capacity, ecosystem services, ecological diversity, change detection, and wind velocity. The book concludes with a discussion of the problems that exist in surface modeling on a global level and evaluates possible solutions to these problems. |

The Volatility Surface $65 Praise for The Volatility Surface “I’m thrilled by the appearance of Jim Gatheral’s new book The Volatility Surface. The literature on stochastic volatility is vast, but difficult to penetrate and use. Gatheral’s book, by contrast, is accessible and practical. It successfully charts a middle ground between specific examples and general models–achieving remarkable clarity without giving up sophistication, depth, or breadth.” –Robert V. Kohn, Professor of Mathematics and Chair, Mathematical Finance Committee, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University “Concise yet comprehensive, equally attentive to both theory and phenomena, this book provides an unsurpassed account of the peculiarities of the implied volatility surface, its consequences for pricing and hedging, and the theories that struggle to explain it.” –Emanuel Derman, author of My Life as a Quant “Jim Gatheral is the wiliest practitioner in the business. This very fine book is an outgrowth of the lecture notes prepared for one of the most popular classes at NYU’s esteemed Courant Institute. The topics covered are at the forefront of research in mathematical finance and the author’s treatment of them is simply the best available in this form.” –Peter Carr, PhD, head of Quantitative Financial Research, Bloomberg LP Director of the Masters Program in Mathematical Finance, New York University “Jim Gatheral is an acknowledged master of advanced modeling for derivatives. In The Volatility Surface he reveals the secrets of dealing with the most important but most elusive of financial quantities, volatility.” –Paul Wilmott, author and mathematician “As a teacher in the field of mathematical finance, I welcome Jim Gatheral’s book as a significant development. Written by a Wall Street practitioner with extensive market and teaching experience, The Volatility Surface gives students access to a level of knowledge on derivatives which was not previously available. I strongly recommend it.” –Marco Avellaneda, Director, Division of Mathematical Finance Courant Institute, New York University “Jim Gatheral could not have written a better book.” –Bruno Dupire, winner of the 2006 Wilmott Cutting Edge Research Award Quantitative Research, Bloomberg LP |

Surface Encounters $75 What it is like to be an animal? Ron Broglio wants to know from the inside, from underneath the fur and feathers. In examining this question, he bypasses the perspectives of biology or natural history to explore how one can construct an animal phenomenology, to think and feel as an animal other—or any other.Until now phenomenology has grappled with how humans are embedded in their world. According to philosophical tradition, animals do not practice the self-reflexive thought that provides humans with depth of being. Without human interiority, philosophers have believed, animals live on the surface of things. But, Broglio argues, the surface can be a site of productive engagement with the world of animals, and as such he turns to humans who work with surfaces: contemporary artists.Taking on the negative claim of animals living only on the surface and turning the premise into a positive set of possibilities for human–animal engagement, Broglio considers artists—including Damien Hirst, Carolee Schneemann, Olly and Suzi, and Marcus Coates—who take seriously the world of the animal on its own terms. In doing so, these artists develop languages of interspecies expression that both challenge philosophy and fashion new concepts for animal studies. |

Surface of Revolution $82.85 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A surface of revolution is a surface in Euclidean space created by rotating a curve (the generatrix) around a straight line in its plane (the axis)Examples of surfaces generated by a straight line are cylindrical and conical surfaces when the line is coplanar with the axis, as well as hyperboloids of one sheet when the line is skew to the axis. A circle that is rotated about a diameter generates a sphere and if the circle is rotated about a coplanar axis other than the diameter it generates a torus. Breather Surface $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In differential equations, a breather surface is a mathematical surface relating to breathers. A differential equation is a mathematical equation for an unknown function of one or several variables that relates the values of the function itself and its derivatives of various orders. Differential equations play a prominent role in engineering, physics, economics, and other disciplines. Visualization of airflow into a duct modelled using the NavierStokes equations, a set of partial differential equations. Differential equations arise in many areas of science and technology: whenever a deterministic relationship involving some continuously varying quantities (modeled by functions) and their rates of change in space and/or time (expressed as derivatives) is known or postulated.
